Endocrynology is a special medical field within internal medicine dealing with the endocrine system, especially its hormons and other biochemicals, their diagnosing, screening and treatment of disease if necessary.

The hormone producing endocrine glands are the pituitary, the thyroid, the parathyroid, the adrenal glands and the pancreas.

The endocrine system’s principal job is to ensure that the body’s endocrine system works properly with the help of the hormones. When circulating in the blood stream, the hormones produced by the endocrine glands help, or block the organs in their function.

Visit to and endocrinologist occur, generally through a referral by an internist, family doctor or gynecologist. Such general clinical symptoms as fatigue, dry skin or excessive perspiration, diarrhea, palpitations or sleep problems are indications for contacting an endocrinologist.

A woman with bleeding problems, a person with abnormal hair growth problems or diseases (gland) that run in families (ex.: thyroid disease) are all reasons for referring the patient to an endocrinologist for further examination and testing.
